Botero in NY
Botero in NY
Sotheby’s new New York home provides a study backdrop for the wit and whimsy of Botero’s paintings.
The Colombian painter Ferdinand Botero spent some pivotal years in New York City. Sotheby’s, in partnership with The Botero Foundation, has a wonderful exhibit that focuses on Botero’s time in New York from 1960 to 1973. Influenced both by the artists around him and a fortuitous encounter with Dorothy Miller of MOMA, New York was an important juncture in his career. Miller arranged the purchase of Mona Lisa, Age 12 in 1961. It was Botero’s first major placement in a museum.
The exhibition is on through September 7.
