Students at Edgemont Junior - Senior High School, faculty members, staff and many parents are learning what it must have been like to grow up in Iran during the Islamic Revolutions, thanks to a school wide initiative, "One School, One Book," launched by teachers and students at this small but innovative school located in Scarsdale, NY.

The event, was inspired by the notion of "what it would be like if the entire school read one book" said educator Fallon Plunkett.  They choose to read The Complete Persepolis the memoir of author Marjane Satrapi, who grew up in Iran during the violent Islamic Revolution.

Persepolis, a graphic novel, is laced with powerful black-and-white comic strip images that help illustrate the story of Satrapi's "unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up" (Random House synopsis).

On the morning of Friday, May 24, International Day at the EHS, students, faculty, and staff will be participating in a wide variety of workshops, discussions, projects, and film screenings.
